The pastor of a tiny Florida church who planned to burn copies of the Koran on September the 11th has bowed to pressure and called off his controversial stunt. Pastor Terry Jones claims he has an agreement that in return for his back-down the Imam in New York will not pursue the building of a Muslim cultural centre near the Ground Zero site. More

Independent Rob Oakeshott has to decide if he wants to serve in the Cabinet before the Prime Minister Julia Gillard can finalise her leadership team. Mr Oakeshott says he will probably decide today. The full Cabinet line-up could then be announced on Saturday and sworn in on Monday. More

The New South Wales Parliament has passed legislation that will pave the way for same sex couples seeking to adopt. Gay rights groups are pleased with the bill and say it will help clarify the legal status of 1500 children in the state who are already living with same sex couples. More

A survey by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has found that a majority of Australians are shunning or have no intention of taking up the offer of a free swine flu vaccination. Medical authorities blame an inadequate advertising program and a decision not to have special flu vaccination days at GP surgeries. More

Lawyers for an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning are frantically trying to have the case against her dropped before she's executed. Iranian authorities say the stoning sentence has been suspended while her conviction for adultery and complicity in her husband's murder is reviewed. But her lawyer says without a formal stay on the sentence there may not be enough time to re-examine the case. More
